Introduced in 1937, the Type A.1 added a yellow outer ring to the standard red, white and blue Type A roundel to improve its visibility against camouflage. It became a familiar marking on camouflaged RAF aircraft, particularly on fuselage sides, and remained in use until Jul 1942 when it was replaced by the less conspicuous Type C.1.
