On 11th July 1957, the last three operational Supermarine Spitfires made a ceremonial flight to RAF Biggin Hill, marking the start of their honourable retirement, with future flights reserved for ceremonial occasions. The aircraft were piloted by Group Captain J.E. "Johnnie" Johnson (CB, CBE, DSO & Two Bars, DFC & Bar), Group Captain J. Rankin (DSO & Bar, DFC & Bar), and Wing Commander P.D. Thompson (AFC). The Spitfires were escorted into Biggin Hill by a Hawker Hunter F.5 of 41 Squadron (WN967) and a Gloster Javelin FAW.1 of 46 Squadron (XA568/H), providing a fitting and memorable tribute to the legendary fighter’s final operational chapter.
