The Consolidated PBY Catalina was a family of long-range patrol flying boats and amphibious aircraft used extensively during World War II by the U.S. Navy, RAF, RAAF, RCAF, and other Allied services. The prototype first flew on Mar 28ᵗʰ, 1935, and the PBY entered U.S. Navy service in 1936. It became one of the most widely used and successful maritime patrol aircraft of the war.

The PBY-5 and amphibious PBY-5A were powered by two Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp radial engines. Depending on the variant and load, the Catalina had a range of around 4,000 km (2,500 miles). Routine patrols often lasted 15 to 18 hours, while specially prepared flights could remain airborne much longer. Its endurance made it well suited to maritime reconnaissance, anti-submarine warfare, convoy patrol, search and rescue, minelaying, transport, and night bombing. The PBY-5 was a flying boat, while the PBY-5A added retractable landing gear for operation from land or water.

Catalinas helped locate Japanese forces during the Battle of Midway, hunted U-boats in the Atlantic, and rescued many downed airmen and shipwreck survivors. Black-painted aircraft known as Black Cats carried out night attacks and reconnaissance missions in the Pacific. The aircraft was commonly called the Cat, while air-sea rescue operations flown by Catalinas and other aircraft were known as Dumbo missions.

More than 3,300 Catalinas and related variants were built in the United States, Canada, and the Soviet Union. Many survive in museums and private collections, and several remain airworthy. The Catalina’s long range, endurance, and ability to operate from remote waters made it one of the most important maritime aircraft of World War II.
