The North American P-51 Mustang was a single-engine fighter developed during the Second World War in response to a British requirement for the Royal Air Force. Designed by North American Aviation, the NA-73X prototype first flew on Oct 26ᵗʰ, 1940, only a few months after work began. The RAF named the aircraft Mustang and introduced the early Allison-powered versions into operational service in 1942, primarily for low-level reconnaissance and ground-attack duties.

Early Mustangs performed well at low and medium altitudes but lost power higher up because of their single-stage Allison V-1710 engines. Trials with the Rolls-Royce Merlin transformed the aircraft’s high-altitude performance, leading to the Packard-built Merlin-powered P-51B, P-51C and later P-51D. With its long range, speed and manoeuvrability, the Mustang became an outstanding escort fighter, capable of accompanying American heavy bombers deep into Germany and engaging enemy fighters throughout the mission.

The P-51 served extensively with the U.S. Army Air Forces, RAF and other Allied air forces in Europe, the Mediterranean, Burma and the Pacific. It was used for bomber escort, air superiority, reconnaissance and ground attack, and later fought as the F-51 during the Korean War. Notable Mustang units included the 332nd Fighter Group, whose Tuskegee Airmen flew distinctive red-tailed P-51s while escorting bombers over Europe.

A total of 15,586 Mustangs were built, making it one of the most widely produced American fighters of the war. Its combination of range, performance and adaptability made it one of the most successful fighters of the Second World War, while its speed and handling have helped it remain a popular airshow, racing and historic aircraft.
