The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, affectionately nicknamed the "Jug," was one of the heaviest and most rugged fighter aircraft of World War II. Introduced in 1942, the P-47 was powered by a massive Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine, allowing it to reach speeds of over 430 mph (700 km/h) and altitudes of 40,000 feet (12,000 metres). Armed with eight .50 calibre machine guns, it packed a devastating punch and could carry up to 2,500 pounds of bombs or rockets, making it highly effective in both air-to-air combat and ground-attack roles.

The P-47 was renowned for its durability, capable of sustaining significant battle damage and still returning its pilot safely home. It was a key asset in the European Theatre, escorting bombers deep into enemy territory and providing close air support during the D-Day invasion and beyond. Pilots often praised its ability to dive at incredible speeds, a manoeuvre that made it deadly in dogfights.

With over 15,000 units produced, the Thunderbolt was one of the most widely used Allied fighters and remains celebrated as a symbol of rugged dependability and combat effectiveness.
