P-40 Warhawk Structured Twill Cap
The Curtiss P-40 was manufactured by Curtiss-Wright at its Buffalo, New York, plant. A total of 13,738 aircraft were produced between 1940 and 1944, making the P-40 the third most-produced American fighter of the Second World War, after the P-51 Mustang and P-47 Thunderbolt. Known as the Warhawk in United States service and as the Tomahawk or Kittyhawk in British and Commonwealth service, the type served with the air forces of 28 nations across North Africa, Europe, China, Burma, the Aleutians and the Pacific.
The P-40 became especially famous through its association with the American Volunteer Group, better known as the Flying Tigers. Organised before the United States entered the war, the group began combat operations against Japanese forces in China and Burma on Dec 20ᵗʰ, 1941. Its shark-mouth markings, inspired by those previously carried by No. 112 Squadron RAF Tomahawks in North Africa, became one of the most recognisable aircraft markings of the war.
Although the P-40 lacked the high-altitude performance of some contemporary fighters, it was rugged, reliable and effective at low and medium altitudes. Its strong construction, heavy armament and good diving performance made it particularly useful in fighter, ground-attack and fighter-bomber roles during the early and middle years of the war.
