The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk was a rugged, single-engine fighter and ground-attack aircraft that served as a critical asset for the U.S. Army Air Forces in the early years of World War II. Though it lacked high-altitude performance compared to newer enemy fighters, the P-40 excelled at low-level combat, offering durability, firepower, and reliability in harsh environments.

Powered by the Allison V-1710 V12 engine, the P-40 reached speeds of around 360 mph, armed with up to six .50-calibre machine guns and capable of carrying bombs for close support missions. It was tough, easy to maintain, and ideally suited for the challenging conditions of the Pacific, North Africa, and China.

The P-40 gained iconic status with the American Volunteer Group (AVG)—the Flying Tigers—who flew shark-mouthed P-40s in China before the U.S. officially entered the war. Despite being outnumbered, these pilots achieved a remarkable kill ratio against Japanese aircraft.

Notable U.S. aces who flew the P-40 include:

Robert L. Scott (13 kills) – Flew over China and authored God Is My Co-Pilot

Gregory “Pappy” Boyington (6 kills in AVG service) – Later earned 22 more in the F4U Corsair

Tex Hill (18.25 kills total, 12+ in the P-40) – One of the top AVG aces

John Alison (6 kills) – Scored both day and night victories in China flying the P-40

With more than 13,700 P-40s built, it was one of the most produced American fighters of WWII. Though later surpassed by more advanced designs, the Warhawk played a vital role in holding the line in the early war years and remains one of the most recognisable U.S. fighters of the era.

Why are the stripes vertical?
Great question - and you're absolutely right that the U.S. flag is usually displayed with horizontal stripes. But in this design, we’ve reimagined the flag as an artistic tribute rather than a literal representation. We chose to depict the flag as if it were hanging vertically from above, similar to how it might appear draped at a hangar entrance or suspended during a ceremony.  This vertical orientation allows the iconic silhouette of the aircraft to really shine -with the red and white stripes running the length of the fuselage, it creates a bold, centred look while still honouring the flag’s spirit and symbolism.

Flex fit , embroidered lettering and good shipping time. That's all you need from a hat and I Love Hangar delivered!
