The P-40 Warhawks of the Aleutian Tigers, part of the 11th Fighter Squadron, played a critical role in one of the most challenging theatres of World War II: the Aleutian Islands. Operating in harsh, freezing conditions, the squadron flew missions against Japanese forces that occupied parts of Alaska, including the islands of Kiska and Attu. The P-40s, known for their durability and resilience, were adorned with distinctive shark-mouth nose art, similar to the Flying Tigers, giving them an aggressive and iconic appearance. Despite extreme weather, treacherous terrain, and limited resources, the Aleutian Tigers excelled in air combat and ground attack missions, helping to drive the Japanese out of the Aleutians by 1943. Their efforts underscored the adaptability of both the P-40 and its pilots in some of the war’s most remote and unforgiving conditions.
