The Bell P-39 Airacobra was a distinctive American fighter developed during the late 1930s. The XP-39 prototype first flew on Apr 6ᵗʰ, 1939, and the type entered service in 1941. Its most unusual feature was its engine, mounted in the fuselage behind the cockpit and connected to the nose-mounted propeller by a long drive shaft beneath the pilot. This arrangement allowed a powerful 37 mm cannon to be mounted in the nose and fire through the propeller hub, giving the aircraft exceptionally heavy forward armament for its time.

Although the XP-39 prototype was originally fitted with a turbo-supercharger, this was removed during development before production, leaving the P-39 with a single-stage supercharger that caused a marked decline in performance at higher altitudes. Despite this limitation, the Airacobra proved fast and effective at low and medium altitudes. It was widely used by the Soviet Air Force under Lend-Lease, where it became particularly successful in air combat on the Eastern Front. Soviet ace Alexander Pokryshkin became closely associated with the Airacobra and scored many of his victories while flying the type.

The USAAF operated the P-39 extensively in the Southwest Pacific, Aleutian Islands, Mediterranean and North Africa. The RAF briefly flew the Airacobra in Britain, while the RAAF used a small number for the defence of Australia. Free French and Italian Co-Belligerent forces also operated the type. Well armed and highly effective at lower altitudes, the P-39 nevertheless could not match the high-altitude performance of contemporary fighters equipped with turbo-superchargers.

A total of 9,588 P-39 Airacobras were built, making it one of Bell Aircraft's most successful wartime designs. Several survive in museums and private collections, with a small number restored to flying condition.
