The phrase "Nobody Kicks Ass Without Tanker Gas" (NKAWTG) is embraced across the U.S. Air Force's refuelling community - and the KC-10 Extender has long been one of its most capable enablers.

Derived from the McDonnell Douglas DC-10, the KC-10 entered service in 1981 to complement the older KC-135. A total of 60 aircraft were built, offering a significantly larger fuel capacity and the unique ability to refuel both boom- and probe-equipped aircraft without reconfiguration. It could carry up to 356,000 pounds of fuel and still haul cargo or personnel at intercontinental range - making it a true multi-role workhorse.

The KC-10 played a vital role in nearly every major U.S. military operation from the Gulf War to Iraq, Afghanistan, and beyond. It delivered fuel and cargo across continents, kept fighter patrols airborne over combat zones, and even supported humanitarian missions and aeromedical evacuations.

After more than four decades of service, the KC-10 began retirement in 2020, with the final aircraft expected to leave service by 2024 as the KC-46 Pegasus takes over its role. Despite its quiet profile, the Extender’s legacy is clear: without it, the reach of American airpower would have been far more limited.

The motto still applies - Nobody Kicks Ass Without Tanker Gas - and for over 40 years, the KC-10 made sure of it.
