The Hawker Siddeley Nimrod was a British maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft developed for the Royal Air Force during the Cold War. Developed by Hawker Siddeley from the de Havilland Comet airframe, the Nimrod was designed to replace the ageing Avro Shackleton in long-range maritime reconnaissance, anti-submarine warfare, and search-and-rescue roles. The prototype first flew on 23 May 1967, and the aircraft entered RAF service in 1969 with No. 201 Squadron RAF.

Powered by four Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan engines, the Nimrod combined long endurance with high transit speed and advanced onboard sensors for submarine detection and maritime surveillance. The aircraft became a central part of Britain’s Cold War maritime defence network, operating extensively over the North Atlantic in support of NATO anti-submarine operations against Soviet submarines. Specialised variants later undertook signals intelligence duties, while the Nimrod AEW3 represented an ultimately unsuccessful airborne early warning programme. Nimrods also saw operational service during the Falklands War, the Gulf War, operations in the Balkans, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Most sources list 49 production Nimrods, plus two prototypes, while the later AEW3 programme used converted Nimrod airframes rather than newly built aircraft. The type was retired from RAF service in 2011 following the cancellation of the Nimrod MRA4 programme.
