The MV-22 Osprey is a tiltrotor medium-lift assault support aircraft operated by the United States Marine Corps, combining the vertical take-off and landing capability of a helicopter with the speed and range of a turboprop aircraft. Developed jointly by Bell Helicopter and Boeing, the V-22 programme emerged from the U.S. Department of Defense’s Joint-service Vertical Take-off/Landing Experimental (JVX) requirement, which was heavily influenced by lessons learned from the failed 1980 Iranian hostage rescue mission. The first V-22 prototype flew on 19 Mar 1989, and the MV-22 entered operational service with the US Marine Corps in 2007. Powered by two Rolls-Royce AE 1107C Liberty engines driving large tilting proprotors, the aircraft typically cruises at around 450-500 km/h and can exceed 500 km/h in level flight, making it significantly faster and longer-ranged than the helicopters it replaced.

The MV-22 replaced the Sikorsky CH-46 Sea Knight as the Marine Corps’ primary medium-lift assault transport and has become a core element of modern USMC expeditionary and amphibious warfare. The aircraft can carry 24 combat-equipped Marines and, depending on configuration, around 30 or more troops in high-density seating arrangements. It has seen extensive service in Iraq, Afghanistan, disaster relief operations, embassy reinforcement missions, humanitarian evacuations, and global crisis-response deployments. Its combination of helicopter-like flexibility and fixed-wing performance has enabled Marine units to operate over far greater distances than previously possible. The US Marine Corps remains by far the largest operator of the Osprey family, with around 350 MV-22s in service, while related variants include the CV-22 Osprey operated by the U.S. Air Force and the CMV-22B Osprey operated by the U.S. Navy.
