The Gloster Meteor was Britain’s first operational jet fighter and the only Allied jet aircraft to see combat during the Second World War. Developed by Gloster Aircraft Company under Air Ministry specification F.9/40, the Meteor was powered by twin turbojet engines based on the pioneering work of Sir Frank Whittle and first flew on 5 Mar 1943. Entering Royal Air Force service in 1944, the Meteor was initially used to intercept German V-1 flying bombs over southern England before later serving in fighter, ground attack, reconnaissance, and training roles. Although it arrived too late to significantly influence the outcome of the war, the Meteor marked the beginning of the RAF’s transition from piston-engined fighters to the jet age.

Following the war, the Meteor became one of the RAF’s principal frontline fighters during the late 1940s and early 1950s and served extensively with numerous overseas air forces. More than 3,900 Meteors were built across all variants, including fighter, night fighter, trainer, and reconnaissance models. The aircraft also saw combat during the Korean War with the Royal Australian Air Force, where it was used primarily in ground attack operations after proving outclassed in air combat against the Soviet-built MiG-15. The Meteor remained in RAF service into the 1960s and played a major role in establishing Britain’s post-war jet fighter capability.
