Master Caution - Push to Reset Felt Storage Box
The Master Caution – Push to Reset system is a key safety feature found in modern aircraft. It alerts the pilot to system malfunctions or abnormal conditions by illuminating a prominent warning light and/or sounding an aural alert. The "Push to Reset" functionality allows the pilot to acknowledge the alert by pressing the button, which silences the alarm and extinguishes the light if the condition has been resolved, or leaves it on if further attention is needed. This system centralises warnings, reducing the need for the pilot to scan multiple instruments in high-stress situations.
The Master Caution system became increasingly common in aircraft in the 1960s and 1970s, particularly as cockpits became more complex and integrated with advanced avionics. It was widely adopted in commercial airliners (like the Boeing 737 and McDonnell Douglas DC-9) and later in military aircraft, improving situational awareness and helping pilots prioritise actions during emergencies. Its introduction was part of broader efforts to improve human-machine interaction and reduce cockpit workload.
