The Grumman Martlet was the British Fleet Air Arm designation for early versions of the American-built F4F Wildcat fighter operated by the Royal Navy during the Second World War. Developed by Grumman as a rugged carrier-based naval fighter, the Martlet was originally ordered by France before the fall of France in 1940, after which the aircraft were diverted to Britain. The first Martlet I aircraft entered Fleet Air Arm service during 1940, making the type one of the earliest American-built fighters to enter British operational service during the war. Depending on variant, the aircraft used Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasp or Wright Cyclone radial engines and combined durability, folding wings on later marks, and heavy armament, giving the Fleet Air Arm a modern monoplane naval fighter at a critical stage of the war.

The Martlet served extensively with the Fleet Air Arm in carrier escort, convoy defence, fleet air defence, and maritime patrol roles across the Atlantic, Mediterranean, Arctic, and Indian Ocean theatres. Martlets achieved some of the first aerial victories by American-built fighters in British service during the war and later played an important role protecting Atlantic convoys from German long-range reconnaissance aircraft and bombers. The type operated from Royal Navy fleet carriers, escort carriers, and shore bases, including extensive service with escort carrier groups during the Battle of the Atlantic. Although primarily a Fleet Air Arm aircraft rather than a wider Commonwealth-operated type, Martlets and later Wildcats were flown by Commonwealth personnel serving within Royal Navy naval air squadrons. Just over 1,000 Martlets and Wildcats were supplied to British forces during the war before the type was gradually supplemented by newer naval fighters such as the Supermarine Seafire and Grumman Hellcat.
