Martin Baltimore Union Jack Structured Twill Cap
Baltimores saw extensive service in the Mediterranean and Middle East, particularly in North Africa, Italy, and the Aegean, where they replaced Bristol Blenheims in day bombing and reconnaissance roles. They were flown by RAF squadrons including Nos. 21, 55, 69, 223, and 203, and also by South African and Hellenic Air Force squadrons under RAF command.
The type was fast and well-armed for its class, featuring four forward-firing machine guns and a bomb load of around 2,000 lbs. However, early versions had issues with visibility and stability, leading to multiple modifications in later variants. Baltimores performed low-level and medium-altitude bombing, anti-shipping strikes, and tactical reconnaissance. They were especially active during the Tunisia Campaign and the invasions of Sicily and Italy.
Baltimores were withdrawn from frontline service by 1946, with no examples retained long-term in the UK.
