The English Electric Lightning was a British supersonic jet fighter developed by English Electric as a high-speed interceptor for the Royal Air Force during the Cold War. Designed under the leadership of W. E. W. Petter to counter the threat of Soviet nuclear bombers, the Lightning featured a distinctive stacked-engine fuselage layout and swept wing design optimised for speed and climb performance. It first flew on 4 Aug 1954 as the P.1 prototype and entered RAF service in 1960. Powered by two Rolls-Royce Avon turbojet engines, the Lightning became the RAF’s first aircraft capable of speeds exceeding Mach 2 and was renowned for its exceptional rate of climb.

The Lightning served as one of the RAF’s principal air defence interceptors throughout the 1960s and 1970s, tasked with protecting British airspace against potential Soviet bomber incursions. Armed with air-to-air missiles and cannon, the aircraft became famous for its rapid acceleration and distinctive appearance. More than 330 Lightnings were built across all variants, including trainer and export models, with the type also serving with the Royal Saudi Air Force and the Kuwait Air Force. The Lightning remained in RAF frontline service until 1988 and is widely regarded as one of Britain’s most iconic Cold War fighters.
