The Lancaster entered service in early 1942 and quickly established itself as Bomber Command’s most effective night bomber. Its first major raid occurred in March 1942 against Essen. It became the standard heavy bomber for area bombing raids over German industrial cities like Hamburg, Cologne, and Berlin, and also participated in precision operations.

Its most famous mission was Operation Chastise (16–17 May 1943), the “Dambusters” raid, in which modified Lancasters of No. 617 Squadron dropped specially designed bouncing bombs to breach the Möhne and Eder dams in Germany. The aircraft’s stability and payload capacity made it ideal for other specialised missions, including dropping the Tallboy and Grand Slam bombs on hardened targets like submarine pens, viaducts, and the U-boat shelter at Brest.
