Lancaster "AJ-M" was one of the Avro Lancaster bombers used in Operation Chastise, the famous "Dambusters" raid on May 16-17, 1943. This aircraft, part of No. 617 Squadron, was piloted by Flight Lieutenant John Hopgood (aged 21). Operation Chastise aimed to destroy key dams in Germany's industrial Ruhr Valley using the innovative "bouncing bombs" designed by Barnes Wallis. "AJ-M" targeted the Möhne Dam, which was successfully breached during the raid, leading to significant flooding and disruption. Unfortunately, "AJ-M" was heavily damaged by anti-aircraft fire and crashed shortly after the attack, with only two crew members surviving.
