This design is based on Lancaster “AJ-A” (serial number ED887) flown by Squadron Leader Henry Melvin "Dinghy" Young DFC & Bar during Operation Chastise (also known as the “Dambusters Raid”). Operation Chastise was an attack on German dams carried out on the night of 16/17 May 1943 by 617 Squadron RAF Bomber Command, using special "bouncing bombs". At 21:47, on the night of May 16, 1943, Lancaster AJ-A (ED887) took off with the Möhne dam as their primary target. After a successful operation, Lancaster AJ-A was hit by German anti-aircraft fire near Wijk aan Zee and crashed at 02:58 south of Castricum aan Zee. Sadly, all seven crew members lost their lives and are buried in Bergen General Cemetery (North-Holland).

Lancaster “AJ-A” (ED887) Crew:
- Pilot S/L H.M. Young DFC & Bar
- Flight Engineer Sgt D.T. Horsfall
- Navigator Sgt C.W. Roberts
- Wireless Operator Sgt L.W. Nichols
- Bomb Aimer F/O V.S. MacCausland (RCAF)
- Front Gunner Sgt G.A. Yeo
- Rear Gunner Sgt W. Ibbotson

Right Sleeve: Full-colour Lancaster with RAF 617 Sqn motto: "Après moi, le déluge" (after me, the flood).

✈ Left Sleeve: Aircraft Serial Number. During training for Operation Chastise, the aircraft involved had the suffix /G shown after the serial. This denoted the aircraft as “secret” and required guarding 24 hours a day. On the night of the mission, the /G was painted over which is why our t-shirts only show the aircraft serial number.
