It was especially effective in low-level combat, ground attack, and desert warfare, becoming closely associated with Allied operations in North Africa. More than 3,000 Tomahawk and Kittyhawk aircraft served with the RAF and Commonwealth air forces during the Second World War, including 841 operated by the Royal Australian Air Force. More than 13,700 P-40 aircraft were built in total, and the type remained in frontline Allied service until the end of the war in 1945.
