The Curtiss Kittyhawk was a single-engine US-built fighter and fighter-bomber operated extensively by the Royal Air Force and Commonwealth air forces during the Second World War. Developed by Curtiss-Wright as part of the P-40 fighter family, it was powered by the Allison V-1710 liquid-cooled V-12 engine and became a widely used Allied fighter in North Africa and the Pacific. Earlier British-designated variants were known as the Tomahawk, while later models were called the Kittyhawk.

Although it lacked the high-altitude performance of aircraft such as the Supermarine Spitfire, the Kittyhawk proved rugged, reliable, and heavily armed. It was especially effective in low-level combat, ground attack, and desert warfare, becoming closely associated with Allied operations in North Africa. More than 3,000 Tomahawk and Kittyhawk aircraft served with the RAF and Commonwealth air forces during the Second World War, including 841 operated by the Royal Australian Air Force. More than 13,700 P-40 aircraft were built in total, and the type remained in frontline Allied service until the end of the war in 1945.
