The KC-135 Stratotanker, introduced in 1957, is a cornerstone of the U.S. Air Force’s aerial refuelling capabilities and has served for over 65 years, with plans to remain operational into the 2030s. Developed from Boeing’s 367-80 prototype, it was produced between 1955 and 1965, with 803 units built. Originally powered by Pratt & Whitney J57 engines, many were later upgraded to KC-135R/T models with more efficient CFM56 engines and modern avionics. Capable of carrying up to 200,000 pounds of fuel, it has supported nearly every major U.S. military operation since Vietnam, including Desert Storm and Enduring Freedom. The KC-135 set endurance milestones, such as refuelling the B-52s during their non-stop circumnavigation of the globe in Operation Power Flite (1957). Its longevity is unmatched for a tanker, reflecting its adaptability and reliability.
