The BAC Jet Provost was a British jet trainer developed by Hunting Percival during the 1950s for the Royal Air Force. Developed from the earlier Percival Provost piston trainer, the Jet Provost was designed to provide the RAF with an effective basic and intermediate jet training aircraft for the transition to frontline jet fighters. The prototype first flew on 26 Jun 1954, while the Jet Provost T.1 entered RAF service in 1957. Powered by a single Armstrong Siddeley Viper turbojet engine, the aircraft became known for its reliable handling and suitability for large-scale pilot training.

The Jet Provost became one of the RAF’s most important post-war training aircraft and remained a familiar part of British military flying training for several decades. Successive variants introduced improved avionics, pressurised cockpits, ejection seats, and increased performance, leading to the widely used T.3, T.4, and T.5 versions. The aircraft trained generations of RAF jet pilots and also achieved export success with several overseas air forces, including a number of Commonwealth operators. Around 750 aircraft were built across the Jet Provost and related Strikemaster family before the Jet Provost was progressively replaced in RAF basic flying training by the Short Tucano from the late 1980s onward.
