The Gloster Javelin was a British twin-engine all-weather interceptor developed by Gloster Aircraft Company for the Royal Air Force during the early Cold War. Designed to counter high-speed Soviet bombers, the Javelin featured a large delta wing, T-tail configuration, airborne interception radar, and a two-seat crew arrangement consisting of a pilot and radar operator. The prototype first flew on 26 Nov 1951, and the aircraft entered RAF service in 1956 as the RAF’s first operational delta-wing fighter and one of its first purpose-designed all-weather interceptor aircraft.

Powered by two Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire turbojet engines, the Javelin was designed for high-altitude interception in day or night conditions. Early variants relied primarily on cannon armament, while later versions carried de Havilland Firestreak air-to-air missiles. The aircraft served extensively with RAF Fighter Command throughout the late 1950s and 1960s, including deployments to Germany, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Although later supplemented and eventually replaced by supersonic interceptors such as the English Electric Lightning, the Javelin provided an important transitional step in RAF air defence during the early guided missile era. A total of 435 Javelins were built before the type was retired from RAF service in 1968.
