The Handley Page Victor was one of the most advanced aircraft of Britain’s V-bomber force, entering RAF service in 1958 as part of the UK’s nuclear deterrent during the Cold War. Instantly recognisable by its distinctive crescent-shaped wing, the Victor was built for high-altitude, high-speed penetration, pushing the limits of aerodynamics at the time.

As Soviet air defences improved, the Victor adapted. By the mid-1960s, it transitioned from a strategic bomber to an air-to-air refuelling tanker, a role that extended its operational life by decades. This shift proved critical.

During the Falklands War in 1982, Victor tankers enabled the legendary Operation Black Buck missions, refuelling Avro Vulcan bombers on round-trip sorties of over 12,000 km, some of the longest bombing missions ever conducted at the time.

From nuclear deterrence to global reach support, the Victor showed remarkable flexibility. Remaining in service until 1993, its combination of bold design and operational impact secured its place as one of the RAF’s most distinctive and enduring aircraft.
