The BAE Systems Hawk is a British-built advanced jet trainer, first flown in 1974. The original Hawk T1 entered RAF service in 1976, training generations of fast jet pilots and famously flown by the Red Arrows. Over 900 Hawks have been built, serving with countries including Australia, where the Hawk 127 variant is used as a lead-in fighter trainer, and the U.S. Navy, which operates the T-45 Goshawk for carrier training. The modernised Hawk T2 (Hawk Mk.128), in RAF service since 2009, features a digital glass cockpit, simulated radar, and advanced avionics to prepare pilots for aircraft like the Typhoon and F-35. The RAF operates 28 T2s at RAF Valley, though recent engine reliability issues have impacted availability. While the T1 is due for retirement by 2027, the T2 remains a key part of the UK’s fast jet training system, with service expected until 2040.
