The crew of Handley Page Halifax LL197 (AL-L) of No. 429 Squadron, RCAF, was lost on the night of 20/21 January 1944 during a bombing mission targeting Berlin. The aircraft took off from RAF Leeming but was shot down by a German night-fighter and crashed near Zeetze, east of the Elbe River. The crew included:

  • Flying Officer Audrey Allen Ayres (J/12157): Wireless Operator – Killed.
  • Flight Sergeant William Henry Bryant (1850867): Flight Engineer – Killed.
  • Pilot Officer Norman Edward Carter (J/88698): Air Gunner – Killed.
  • Pilot Officer Benjamin Nelson Forster (J/19310): Navigator – Killed.
  • Flying Officer Harold Douglas Paddison (J/22338): Pilot – Killed.
  • Flying Officer Jack McAllister Ramsay (J/24028): Air Bomber – Killed.
  • Sergeant Ralph Alexander Saffran (R/150665): Mid-Upper Gunner – Taken as a Prisoner of War (PoW).
