The Folland Gnat was a small British lightweight jet fighter and trainer developed by Folland Aircraft during the 1950s. Designed by W. E. W. “Teddy” Petter as an inexpensive and highly manoeuvrable lightweight fighter, the Gnat evolved from the earlier Folland Midge concept demonstrator. The first Gnat prototype flew on 18 Jul 1955, while the two-seat Gnat T.1 trainer first flew in Aug 1959. Although the Royal Air Force did not adopt the single-seat fighter version for operational service, it selected the Gnat T.1 advanced trainer during the early 1960s.

The Gnat became one of the RAF’s most recognisable post-war aircraft through its service with the Red Arrows, which operated the type from 1965 until 1979. Compact, highly agile, and capable of impressive aerobatic performance, the aircraft earned a strong reputation among RAF pilots, although its compact size created cockpit and maintenance limitations. The aircraft also achieved notable combat success in service with the Indian Air Force during the Indo-Pakistani Wars of 1965 and 1971, where its small size and manoeuvrability helped it gain the nickname “Sabre Slayer” against Pakistani North American F-86 Sabre fighters. Approximately 450 Gnats were built, including aircraft produced under licence by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited in India.
