The North American FJ-4 Fury was the final and most extensively redesigned version of the Fury series, a family whose earlier swept-wing variants were developed from the F-86 Sabre. Although it retained the general appearance of the FJ-3, the FJ-4 featured a thinner wet wing with greater internal fuel capacity, an enlarged fuselage, revised tail surfaces, strengthened landing gear, and improved low-speed handling for carrier operations. The first FJ-4 flew on Oct 28ᵗʰ, 1954, and the type entered service in 1955 with Marine Fighter Squadron VMF-451.

Powered by a Wright J65 turbojet, the FJ-4 was armed with four 20 mm cannon and could carry AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles. Its increased fuel capacity and aerial refuelling capability gave it considerably greater range than earlier Fury variants. The aircraft served with both the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps as a carrier-capable fighter, although it never saw combat.

The follow-on FJ-4B was developed primarily for attack and tactical nuclear strike missions. It featured a strengthened wing, six underwing hardpoints, additional speed brakes, and the Low-Altitude Bombing System for nuclear weapon delivery. It could also carry conventional bombs, rockets, and the AGM-12 Bullpup air-to-surface missile, which deployed operationally with FJ-4B squadrons from 1959.

A total of 374 aircraft were built, comprising 152 FJ-4 fighters and 222 FJ-4B attack aircraft. Under the unified U.S. military designation system introduced in 1962, the FJ-4 became the F-1E and the FJ-4B became the AF-1E. The type was progressively withdrawn as newer aircraft such as the F8U Crusader and A4D Skyhawk entered service, although reserve units continued flying the Fury into the mid-1960s.
