During the Second World War, RAF Fighter Command pilots could spend long periods at readiness, waiting in dispersal huts or nearby rest areas close to their aircraft. When expecting action, pilots often remained in their flying gear so they could respond immediately. Cards, reading, tea and conversation helped pass the time during these uncertain periods of waiting. Once the order to “scramble” came from the operations room, the pilots abandoned whatever they were doing and ran for their aircraft, with squadrons expected to become airborne within minutes.

This artwork is based on an original historical photograph and has been digitally recreated in a charcoal sketch style using modern image-making tools.
