The Grumman F9F Panther was a single-seat, straight-wing, carrier-based jet fighter developed for the U.S. Navy after the Second World War. It was Grumman’s first jet fighter and used a rugged layout typical of the company’s naval aircraft, with nose-mounted 20 mm cannon, wingtip fuel tanks and later fighter-bomber capability.

The XF9F-2 prototype first flew on Nov 21ˢᵗ, 1947, and the first Panthers entered squadron service in 1949. During the Korean War, the Panther became the Navy and Marine Corps’ main jet fighter, flying fighter, escort, interdiction, reconnaissance and ground-attack missions.

F9Fs flew from USS Valley Forge during the first U.S. carrier strikes of the Korean War on Jul 3ʳᵈ, 1950. The Panther also scored the first air-to-air jet victory in U.S. Naval Aviation history and logged 78,524 combat flights during the war.

The Blue Angels used the Panther from 1951, making it their first jet aircraft. Grumman built 1,385 straight-wing Panthers before production ended in Jan 1953, and the design led directly to the swept-wing F9F Cougar.

Why are the stripes vertical?
Great question - and you're absolutely right that the U.S. flag is usually displayed with horizontal stripes. But in this design, we’ve reimagined the flag as an artistic tribute rather than a literal representation. We chose to depict the flag as if it were hanging vertically from above, similar to how it might appear draped at a hangar entrance or suspended during a ceremony. This vertical orientation allows the iconic silhouette of the aircraft to really shine -with the red and white stripes running the length of the fuselage, it creates a bold, centred look while still honouring the flag’s spirit and symbolism.
