The Cutlass was intended to serve as a carrier-based interceptor and fighter-bomber, and was among the first U.S. Navy aircraft designed from the outset for jet power and swept-wing aerodynamics. The XF7U-1 and F7U-1 were powered by Westinghouse J34 turbojets, while the first F7U-3 aircraft used interim Allison J35 engines before the Westinghouse J46 became available. All of these engines delivered less performance than the design required. The aircraft suffered from poor acceleration, mechanical unreliability, and structural problems, particularly with its complex nose landing gear. Pilots also had to contend with difficult takeoffs, high landing speeds, and limited visibility from the cockpit. These issues earned the F7U a notorious reputation and nicknames such as the "Gutless Cutlass" and "Ensign Eliminator."
The U.S. Navy operated the F7U-3 in frontline squadrons from 1954 to 1957, including limited deployments aboard aircraft carriers. A total of 98 F7U-3M variants were built with the ability to carry the AIM-7 Sparrow missile. In Mar 1956, VA-83 deployed aboard USS Intrepid with the missile-armed Cutlass, marking the first overseas carrier deployment by a U.S. Navy squadron equipped with guided air-to-air missiles. The aircraft never saw combat and was quickly replaced as more capable fighters such as the F9F Cougar and F8U Crusader entered service.
A total of 307 Cutlasses were built across all variants. The aircraft recorded 78 accidents during approximately 55,000 flying hours, with about one-quarter of the fleet lost. Twenty-one Navy pilots and four test pilots were killed, making the Cutlass one of the most dangerous U.S. carrier jets of its era, even by 1950s standards.
Although its service life was short and troubled, the F7U Cutlass was a bold design that incorporated several advanced features for its time. Its poor engines, structural weaknesses, and difficult carrier-handling characteristics prevented it from meeting expectations, but the lessons learned from the program contributed to the development of later naval jet aircraft.
