The Vought F4U Corsair was one of the most formidable American fighters of World War II and the Korean War, renowned for its distinctive inverted gull wing design and outstanding performance. Powered by the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine, the Corsair could reach speeds over 400 mph, making it one of the fastest U.S. piston-engine fighters of the war. Rugged, heavily armed, and capable of absorbing significant battle damage, it became a favourite of pilots for both air combat and ground attack missions.

Initially hampered by poor visibility and landing gear bounce that made carrier landings hazardous, the Corsair was first fielded from land bases by the U.S. Marine Corps, where it quickly proved lethal. As improvements were made, it was successfully integrated into U.S. Navy carrier operations. The Corsair saw extensive combat across the Pacific in WWII, including in the Solomon Islands, Okinawa, and Philippines, and later flew close air support missions during the Korean War. It was also flown by the Royal Navy (as the “Corsair IV”) and Royal New Zealand Air Force.

Armed with six .50-calibre machine guns and capable of carrying bombs and rockets, the F4U achieved an exceptional 11:1 kill-to-loss ratio, destroying over 2,000 enemy aircraft in WWII. More than 12,500 Corsairs were built across multiple variants, including night fighters and ground-attack versions.

The Corsair was also flown by some of the U.S. Marine Corps’ top aces. Gregory “Pappy” Boyington of VMF-214 “Black Sheep” Squadron claimed 28 aerial victories (including some earlier with the Flying Tigers in China) and was awarded the Medal of Honor. Other notable Marine Corps Corsair aces include Kenneth Walsh (21 kills, Medal of Honor) and Robert Hanson (25 kills, Medal of Honor, posthumously). Their exploits helped cement the Corsair’s reputation as one of the greatest American fighter aircraft of all time.
