The Corsair was primarily manufactured by Vought at their plant in Stratford, Connecticut, where approximately 7,829 F4U Corsairs were produced. In addition to Vought, production was also undertaken by Goodyear and Brewster to meet the high demand. A total of 12,571 F4U Corsairs were produced during and after the war.

The F4U Corsair, known for its distinctive gull-wing design and powerful performance, was one of the most formidable fighters of World War II. Introduced in 1942, it quickly became a favourite among pilots for its speed, climbing ability, and heavy armament, with a top speed of 446 mph. The Corsair earned the nickname "Whistling Death" from the Japanese due to the sound it made during dives. It was particularly effective in the Pacific Theater, excelling in both air-to-air combat where it was a key player in securing Allied air superiority, with a kill-to-loss ratio of over 11:1.
