The F4F Wildcat was initially manufactured by Grumman at its facility in Bethpage, New York. However, to meet the high demand during World War II, additional production was carried out by General Motors’ Eastern Aircraft Division at their plant in Linden, New Jersey. Under General Motors, the Wildcats were designated as FM-1 and FM-2 models.

In total, about 7,885 Wildcats were produced, with Grumman manufacturing around 1,988 of these in Bethpage before shifting its focus to producing the F6F Hellcat. The Linden plant contributed significantly to the war effort, producing the majority of the later Wildcats. The Wildcat's robust design and the combined production efforts at these facilities made it a key asset in the U.S. Navy’s early war successes in the Pacific.

The F4F Wildcat, played a pivotal role in the Pacific Theatre despite being outmatched in speed and maneuverability by the Japanese Zero. With a top speed of 318 mph and armed with four .50-caliber machine guns, the Wildcat was known for its toughness and the innovative "Thach Weave" tactic, which helped counter the more agile Zero. One of the most famous Wildcat aces was Lieutenant Edward "Butch" O'Hare, who became the Navy's first flying ace in 1942 after single-handedly shooting down five Japanese bombers in a single mission, earning him the Medal of Honor. Another notable ace was Marion Carl, who achieved 18.5 victories flying the Wildcat. The aircraft's kill-to-loss ratio of approximately 6:1 was a testament to the skill of its pilots and its rugged design, contributing significantly to the Allied success in the Pacific.

Super soft, nostalgic sweatshirt! Comfortable, stylish, and unique!
