The F4D Skyray was a distinctive delta-winged interceptor designed primarily for high-speed, high-altitude interception missions during the early Cold War. Nicknamed the "Ford" due to its F4D designation, the Skyray was developed to launch rapidly from aircraft carriers and climb quickly to intercept incoming enemy bombers at a time when every second counted in the nuclear age. Its unique shape and exceptional climb performance made it one of the most advanced naval fighters of its era.

First flown on 23 Jan 1951 and entering operational service in 1956, the F4D was powered by a Pratt & Whitney J57 afterburning turbojet, becoming the first carrier-based aircraft to exceed Mach 1 in level flight. It also established several world time-to-climb records during the 1950s. Its large delta wing provided excellent low-speed handling for carrier operations while maintaining outstanding climb performance and supersonic capability.

The Skyray served with both the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps, primarily in the fleet air defence and interceptor roles. It equipped numerous Navy and Marine fighter squadrons during the late 1950s and early 1960s, although its frontline service was relatively brief as missile technology and more capable multi-role fighters rapidly emerged. Despite never seeing combat, the F4D remains notable as the last fighter designed by the Douglas Aircraft Company before its merger with McDonnell. A total of 419 Skyrays were built before the type was withdrawn from frontline service during the mid-1960s and replaced by aircraft such as the F-4 Phantom II. Today, the Skyray is remembered as one of the most distinctive and capable naval interceptors of the 1950s, combining record-setting performance with pioneering supersonic carrier operations.
