The McDonnell F3H Demon was a swept-wing, carrier-based all-weather fighter developed for United States Navy fleet air defence during the early Cold War. The XF3H-1 prototype first flew on 7 Aug 1951, and the type entered operational service in Mar 1956. Equipped with airborne interception radar and later guided air-to-air missiles, the Demon became the Navy’s first swept-wing, all-weather, missile-armed fighter.

The Demon was originally designed around the Westinghouse J40 turbojet, but the engine proved seriously underpowered and unreliable, contributing to multiple accidents and threatening the entire programme. McDonnell redesigned the aircraft around the Allison J71, producing the improved F3H-2 series. Although the J71 made the Demon more practical, the aircraft remained subsonic in level flight and could exceed Mach 1 only in a dive.

The Demon was armed with four 20 mm cannon, although the upper pair was sometimes removed to reduce weight. Missile-capable variants carried AIM-7 Sparrow and AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles, while later F3H-2 aircraft could also carry bombs and rockets for limited strike missions. Its radar, stability and missile armament made it an important step in the Navy’s transition from gun-armed day fighters to all-weather missile interception.

The Demon served exclusively with the United States Navy, equipping 23 fighter squadrons between 1956 and 1964. It never saw combat, although squadrons deployed aboard carriers in the Mediterranean and Western Pacific during periods of Cold War tension. Approximately 520 Demons were built before the final aircraft retired in 1964.

The F3H was replaced by the faster and more capable F-4 Phantom II. The Phantom’s development grew partly from McDonnell’s proposed F3H-G “Super Demon”, giving the Demon a direct place in the design history of one of the most successful naval fighters ever built.
