The North American F-86 Sabre was a swept-wing jet fighter developed for the U.S. Air Force in the late 1940s. It made its first flight in October 1947, with the first production model flying in May 1948. The Sabre soon became the USAF’s first swept-wing fighter and one of the defining aircraft of the Korean War.

Built as a day fighter, the F-86A, F-86E and F-86F fought the Soviet-designed MiG-15 over Korea. The first known combat between swept-wing jet fighters took place on Dec 17ᵗʰ, 1950, when F-86s and MiG-15s met over Korea. By the end of the war, USAF sources credited Sabre pilots with 792 MiG kills.

The F-86 was fast, manoeuvrable and well armed, usually with six .50 calibre machine guns in early fighter versions. Later Sabres also served as fighter-bombers, interceptors and reconnaissance aircraft. More than 5,500 F-86 day fighters were built in the U.S. and Canada, and the wider Sabre family served with air forces around the world.

Why are the stripes vertical?
Great question - and you're absolutely right that the U.S. flag is usually displayed with horizontal stripes. But in this design, we’ve reimagined the flag as an artistic tribute rather than a literal representation. We chose to depict the flag as if it were hanging vertically from above, similar to how it might appear draped at a hangar entrance or suspended during a ceremony.  This vertical orientation allows the iconic silhouette of the aircraft to really shine -with the red and white stripes running the length of the fuselage, it creates a bold, centred look while still honouring the flag’s spirit and symbolism.
