The F-86 Sabre was a transonic jet fighter developed in the late 1940s and became one of the most iconic fighters of the early Cold War. First flown in 1 October 1947 and entering service in 1949, the F-86 featured swept wings and excellent handling, making it a formidable adversary in air combat. Over 9,800 Sabres were built, making it the most-produced Western jet fighter of the era. It saw extensive combat during the Korean War, where U.S. Air Force F-86s famously battled Soviet-designed MiG-15s in the skies over “MiG Alley.” F-86 pilots claimed 792 MiG-15s shot down, against 76 Sabres lost in air-to-air combat—though postwar analysis suggests the actual kill ratio was closer to 2:1. The Sabre was exported to over 25 countries and served until 1994 with the Bolivian Air Force. It remains one of the most successful jet fighters of the 20th century.
