F-84 Stars & Stripes Structured Twill Cap
The Thunderjet served extensively during the Korean War, where it was used for interdiction, close air support and attacks against airfields, railways, bridges, vehicles and other ground targets. Although outclassed by the swept-wing MiG-15 in air combat, the F-84’s range, payload and rugged construction made it well suited to the fighter-bomber role. The F-84G could carry up to 4,000 lb of bombs, rockets and other external stores and was also equipped to deliver the Mark 7 tactical nuclear bomb. Thunderjets flew approximately 86,400 combat sorties during the war.
The F-84 also played an important role in the early development of aerial refuelling and long-range fighter operations. In Sep 1950, Colonel David Schilling flew a modified F-84E nonstop from Britain to the United States in approximately ten hours, refuelling three times in flight. Later mass deployments demonstrated the ability to move complete fighter formations across the Atlantic and Pacific using aerial refuelling and staged bases.
Approximately 4,450 straight-wing F-84 Thunderjets were built. The wider F-84 family exceeded 7,500 aircraft when the substantially redesigned swept-wing F-84F Thunderstreak and RF-84F Thunderflash reconnaissance aircraft are included. Widely supplied to NATO and other allied air forces, the F-84 became an important part of Western tactical air power during the early Cold War.
