F-80 Stars & Stripes Structured Twill Cap
Although a handful of pre-production YP-80A aircraft deployed to Europe before the war ended, they did not see combat during the Second World War. The P-80 entered full operational service after the war and was redesignated the F-80 in 1948 under the newly independent U.S. Air Force's aircraft designation system. It served extensively during the Korean War, initially in air superiority and ground attack roles before increasingly being employed as a fighter-bomber after the arrival of the swept-wing MiG-15. On 8 Nov 1950, Lieutenant Russell J. Brown was officially credited with the USAF's first jet-versus-jet aerial victory, claiming a MiG-15, although the claim has since been questioned by some historians. The F-80 was soon replaced in the air superiority role by the more capable swept-wing F-86 Sabre.
A total of 1,731 P/F-80s were built, and the design laid the foundation for America's jet age. Its two-seat trainer derivative, the T-33 Shooting Star, became one of the most successful and widely operated jet trainers in aviation history, serving with air forces around the world for decades. The Shooting Star marked a crucial turning point in military aviation, bridging the gap between the propeller-driven fighters of the Second World War and the high-performance jet aircraft of the Cold War.
