The Northrop F-5 was one of the most versatile and widely used light fighter aircraft of the Cold War. Designed during the late 1950s as a low-cost, high-performance fighter for U.S. allies, the F-5 was compact, fast, and easy to maintain, making it well suited to export through programmes such as the Military Assistance Program (MAP). The F-5A Freedom Fighter entered service in 1962, followed by the more capable F-5E Tiger II in 1972.

Powered by two General Electric J85 turbojet engines, the F-5 delivered supersonic performance in a small, agile airframe. Fighter variants were armed with twin 20 mm cannons and could carry air-to-air missiles, rockets, bombs, and other external stores, giving the aircraft an effective balance of air-to-air and light ground-attack capability.

Although only used briefly in combat by the U.S. Air Force during the Skoshi Tiger evaluation in Vietnam, the F-5 saw extensive operational service with U.S. allies across Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. It later became famous in U.S. service as a dissimilar air combat trainer, equipping the U.S. Navy's TOPGUN school and U.S. Air Force Aggressor squadrons to simulate Soviet fighters. More than 2,600 F-5s were built, and many remain in frontline service today following extensive avionics and weapons upgrades, making the F-5 one of the most enduring and successful lightweight fighters ever produced.
