F-4G "YGBSM" Structured Twill Cap
The F-4G Phantom II, the most advanced and final dedicated Wild Weasel platform flown by the U.S. Air Force, carried on the dangerous legacy of its predecessors by conducting suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD) through the late Cold War and into the Gulf War. Based on the F-4E airframe, the F-4G was heavily modified for electronic warfare - its internal gun was removed to house sophisticated radar-homing and jamming systems, enabling it to detect, identify, and destroy enemy radar installations.
Armed with weapons like the AGM-45 Shrike, AGM-78 Standard ARM, and AGM-88 HARM, the F-4G operated in “Hunter-Killer” teams, typically pairing with F-4Es or F-16s. The G-model handled radar detection and suppression, while its partner aircraft delivered follow-up strikes. This strategy proved highly effective during Operation Desert Storm, where F-4Gs flew over 2,000 missions, neutralising enemy air defenses with precision and resilience.
The motto “YGBSM” (“You Gotta Be Shittin’ Me”) remained a hallmark of the Wild Weasel ethos, capturing the mix of danger, disbelief, and dark humour that defined SEAD crews. The F-4G was officially retired in April 1996, when the last operational unit- the 561st Fighter Squadron at Nellis AFB - stood down.
While today’s F-16CJ/CM carries on the Wild Weasel mission with advanced multi-role capabilities, the F-4G remains the last U.S. aircraft purpose-built solely for the SEAD role, marking the pinnacle of the dedicated Wild Weasel era.
