The F-4 Phantom II was a twin-engine supersonic fighter operated by both the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force during the Cold War. Originally developed by McDonnell Douglas for the United States Navy, the Phantom was adapted for British service with Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan engines and a range of British avionics and equipment. The Royal Navy introduced the Phantom FG.1 into service in 1969 for fleet air defence operations aboard aircraft carriers including HMS Ark Royal, while the RAF operated both Phantom FG.1 and Phantom FGR.2 variants in air defence, strike, and reconnaissance roles.

Powered by two Rolls-Royce Spey engines, British Phantoms offered improved low-level performance compared with American-built variants, although the larger engines reduced top-end aerodynamic performance slightly. The Phantom became one of the RAF’s principal air defence fighters during the 1970s and 1980s, replacing aircraft such as the English Electric Lightning in several squadrons. RAF and Royal Navy Phantoms served extensively in the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Falkland Islands, where RAF Phantoms were deployed for air defence following the Falklands War. The Phantom remained in RAF service until 1992 and is remembered as one of the most capable and recognisable Western fighter aircraft of the Cold War era.
