The McDonnell F-4 Phantom II was a twin-engine, two-seat, all-weather fighter developed for the United States Navy as a high-altitude fleet interceptor. The prototype first flew on May 27ᵗʰ, 1958, and the type entered U.S. Navy service in 1961 before being adopted by the United States Marine Corps and United States Air Force. Powered by two General Electric J79 afterburning turbojets, the Phantom could exceed Mach 2 and carry more than 18,000 lb of missiles, bombs, rockets and other external stores.

The F-4 quickly demonstrated exceptional performance, establishing more than a dozen world speed, altitude and time-to-climb records. In 1959, a Phantom reached 98,560 feet during Project Top Flight, and in 1961 another set an absolute world speed record of 1,606.342 mph. Originally designed without an internal gun, the Phantom relied primarily on AIM-7 Sparrow radar-guided missiles and AIM-9 Sidewinder infrared-guided missiles for air combat. Combat experience later contributed to the introduction of an internal 20 mm M61 Vulcan cannon on the F-4E.

The Phantom developed into a highly capable multirole aircraft used for fleet defence, air superiority, ground attack, reconnaissance and suppression of enemy air defences. It served extensively with the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force during the Vietnam War, where it fought enemy MiGs, escorted strike formations, attacked ground targets and hunted surface-to-air missile sites. It later saw combat with several foreign operators, including Israel, Iran and the United Kingdom.

A total of 5,195 Phantoms were built, making it one of the most widely produced Western supersonic fighters. Although eventually replaced in U.S. service by aircraft such as the F-14 Tomcat, F-15 Eagle and F-16 Fighting Falcon, the Phantom remained operational with several countries for decades and continues in limited service with a small number of air forces. Its speed, payload, radar and ability to perform numerous missions made it one of the most successful combat aircraft of the Cold War.
