The F-4 Phantom II is a legendary jet known for its power and versatility. Introduced in 1960, it could achieve a top speed of Mach 2.23 (1,473 mph) at 40,000 feet. The Phantom was the first aircraft to simultaneously hold records for speed, altitude, and time-to-climb. Notably, it set an absolute speed record of 1,606.342 mph in 1961 and a world altitude record of 98,557 feet in 1959. Designed initially as an interceptor, it later excelled in multiple roles, including ground attack and reconnaissance. The F-4 could carry over 18,000 pounds of ordnance, including missiles and bombs, making it one of the most heavily armed fighters of its time. Its adaptability led to its use by the U.S. Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps, and it played a critical role during the Vietnam War. The F-4’s advanced radar and missile systems set new standards for air combat.
