The F-35B Lightning II is a fifth-generation stealth multirole combat aircraft operated jointly by the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy as part of the United Kingdom’s modern carrier strike capability. Developed by Lockheed Martin, the F-35B is the short take-off and vertical landing variant of the Lightning II family, designed to operate from aircraft carriers and austere forward bases. Powered by a Pratt & Whitney F135 engine with a Rolls-Royce LiftSystem, the aircraft combines stealth technology, advanced sensors, supersonic performance, and networked battlefield capabilities. The first UK-based F-35Bs arrived at RAF Marham in 2018, with No. 617 Squadron RAF becoming the first frontline British Lightning squadron.

The F-35B operates under the joint RAF and Royal Navy Lightning Force structure and serves aboard the Royal Navy’s HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carriers, restoring Britain’s fixed-wing carrier strike capability for the first time since the retirement of the Harrier in 2010. Designed for air defence, strike, reconnaissance, and electronic warfare missions, the F-35B is expected to remain a central component of British air power for decades
