The F-35A Lightning II is the cutting-edge fifth-generation multirole stealth fighter of the Royal Australian Air Force, operated by No. 3 Squadron at RAAF Base Williamtown, New South Wales. One of the first RAAF units to transition from the F/A-18A/B Classic Hornet, No. 3 Squadron began F-35 operations in 2018 and played a key role in bringing the Lightning II into frontline service.

As a pioneer F-35 unit, No. 3 Squadron was instrumental in testing and integrating the jet's advanced capabilities—ranging from low observable stealth and sensor fusion to network-centric warfare. The squadron achieved initial operational capability (IOC) alongside No. 75 Squadron, cementing its role in Australia’s future air combat force.

Regularly involved in multinational exercises such as Pitch Black, Talisman Sabre, and Red Flag, No. 3 Squadron trains to operate seamlessly with allied air forces, strengthening interoperability and regional deterrence. As part of the RAAF’s broader F-35A fleet of 72 aircraft, the squadron ensures that Australia remains prepared for the full spectrum of air combat missions across the Indo-Pacific and beyond.
