The F-111 Aardvark was a twin-engine, variable-geometry wing aircraft developed in the 1960s for long-range strike and interdiction missions. First flown in 1964 and entering service in 1967, it introduced numerous innovations, including terrain-following radar, an internal weapons bay, and swing wings. A total of 563 F-111s were built across multiple variants, including the F-111A, F-111F, EF-111A (electronic warfare), and the FB-111 (strategic bomber for the USAF). The F-111 saw extensive action in Vietnam, Operation El Dorado Canyon (Libya, 1986), and Operation Desert Storm (1991), conducting precision strikes at night and in all weather. In Vietnam, 11 F-111As were lost in combat, mostly early on due to mechanical issues and ground fire. The aircraft was retired by the USAF in 1998 and by the RAAF in 2010, where it served with distinction. Nicknamed the “Aardvark” for its long nose and terrain-hugging tactics, the F-111 remains a Cold War icon of deep-strike air power.
