F-106 Stars & Stripes Structured Twill Cap
The Convair F-106 Delta Dart was a supersonic all-weather interceptor developed for the U.S. Air Force during the Cold War. A refined evolution of the F-102, it featured a powerful Pratt & Whitney J75 turbojet, a streamlined delta-wing design, and advanced avionics tied to the Hughes MA-1 fire control system, enabling semi-automated interception. Armed with AIR-2 Genie nuclear rockets, AIM-4 Falcons, and an internal weapons bay, the F-106 was designed to counter Soviet bombers at high speed and altitude.
First flown in 1956, the F-106 entered service in 1959 and became the backbone of Air Defense Command through the 1960s and ’70s. Although it never saw combat, it was praised for its speed—reaching Mach 2.3—and served as the USAF’s primary continental air defense fighter until the mid-1980s.
A total of 340 F-106As and 63 F-106Bs were built. The type was finally retired from USAF service in 1988, with some later converted into QF-106 target drones.
Why are the stripes vertical?
Great question - and you're absolutely right that the U.S. flag is usually displayed with horizontal stripes. But in this design, we’ve reimagined the flag as an artistic tribute rather than a literal representation. We chose to depict the flag as if it were hanging vertically from above, similar to how it might appear draped at a hangar entrance or suspended during a ceremony. This vertical orientation allows the iconic silhouette of the aircraft to really shine -with the red and white stripes running the length of the fuselage, it creates a bold, centred look while still honouring the flag’s spirit and symbolism.
